Lighting a mural for evening service
Warm dimmed light, color rendering, and grazing versus wall-wash: how to light a restaurant mural so it reads at dinner.
A mural is chosen in daylight or under a showroom's bright neutral light, and then it spends most of its working life at dinner, in a dim room lit warm. If the lighting is not planned for the mural, the piece that looked spectacular on approval can disappear the moment the dimmers come down for evening service. Lighting is not the finishing touch on a restaurant mural. It is half of whether it works.
Two properties of the light matter most. The first is color temperature, measured in kelvin. Restaurants light evening service warm, commonly around 2700K at the amber end of the scale, because warm light flatters food and skin and signals intimacy. A mural's colors have to be chosen knowing they will be seen under that warm cast, not the neutral 4000K of the sample room. Cool blues and greens in particular can read very differently at 2700K.
The second is the color rendering index, or CRI, a 0-to-100 measure of how faithfully a light source shows color compared to natural light. Cheap fixtures with low CRI make even a well-printed mural look muddy and flat, graying out the subtle tones that made it worth commissioning. High-CRI fixtures, generally 90 and above for hospitality, are what let a mural's color survive the dim room.
Then there is direction. Wall-washing floods the mural with an even spread of light and is the safe default for a flat printed scene, keeping the whole image legible from across the room. Grazing, raking light across the surface from a steep angle, dramatizes texture and is the move for a mural with real relief, a grasscloth, or a heavily embossed surface, though on a flat print it mostly exaggerates any imperfection in the wall behind it. Matching the technique to the material is the whole trick.
One test costs nothing and settles most arguments: before the mural is finalized, dim the room's real lighting to the level it will run at during dinner and look at a printed sample on the actual wall. A color that sang under the contractor's bright work lights and dies at 2700K is a problem you want to find on a sample, not on a finished wall you paid to print once.
